Woman taken to hospital with serious injuries after early morning crash closed part of the A66

A driver who crashed her car on the A66 in the early hours of the morning had to be freed by firefighters.

The woman in her early 20s was travelling on the westbound carriageway from Stockton towards Darlington when she crashed at around 12.30am on Wednesday.

Emergency services including the Durham Road Policing Unit , firefighters and paramedics were sent to the scene near the to the village of Sadberge.

The driver was trapped inside a Vauxhall Corsa, which was the only vehicle involved, and was cut out of the car by firefighters.

She was then taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough suffering from serious leg injuries.

The road was closed for around three hours between Long Newton and Sadberge to allow emergency services to free the woman and recover the vehicle.

During the closure, drivers were diverted onto Mill Lane and then onto the A67 westbound.

The road was reopened at around 4am.
