Woman taken to hospital after falling from M60 bridge in early hours

A woman has been taken to hospital after she fell from a bridge above the M60 this morning.

Police closed both sides of the motorway from around 6am and ambulances were called to the scene after reports that the woman had fallen.

The extent of her injuries is currently unknown but the road remained shut to traffic for around an hour between the Swinton and Pendlebury junctions.

Police officers were spotted on the Manchester Road bridge above the M60 this morning and the walkways across the road were cordoned off.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Police were called just after 6am this morning (Monday 19 April) to a report of a woman falling from a bridge over the M60 between junctions 16 and 17.

"Officers attended, and the woman was taken to hospital."

The M60 closure caused long delays for commuters, with queues back to junction 18 for Simister Island on the anti-clockwise carriageway, according to traffic reporting service Inrix.

On the opposite side, cars were backed up to Junction 12 for the M602.

The lanes reopened at around 7am and traffic began to flow freely around an hour later.

But, a scene remains in place on the Manchester Road bridge.
