An elderly woman has been taken to hospital after falling on the escalator at the Arndale Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
The entrance to the escalator, which leads up to the food court on Market Street, was taped off following the incident.
Paramedics were seen attending to a patient at the scene at around 12pm.
An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We were called at 12.05pm. We attended with an ambulance and a first aid response.
"A female in her early 80s was taken to hospital following a fall. It appears to have been on the escalator.
"We informed the hospital that were were arriving. The patient was conscious and breathing."
An eyewitness was walking past when they saw the escalator had been 'blocked off'.
