Woman taken to hospital after crash between motorcycle and a car on A690 near Durham

A major road was closed for more than four hours after a motorbike passenger suffered a broken shoulder and ankle in a crash.

A car and motorbike carrying two people collided on the A690 heading east from Durham to the A1 just after 10am on Saturday.

Police officers were called to the scene and the road was closed eastbound from Broomside Lane to the A1 junction at Carrville.

The female pillion passenger had suffered fractures to her right shoulder and left ankle and was taken to hospital.

The man riding the motorcycle and the driver of the car were said to be in shock but unharmed.

During the road closure, traffic was diverted around the scene onto Broomside Lane.

Congestion built up back to the Gilesgate Roundabout in Durham city centre during the emergency response.

The A690 was fully reopened at around 2.30pm as Durham Constabulary traffic officers left.
