Woman taken to hospital after car overturns and lands on roof in A1 crash

A woman involved in a crash on the A1 in Newcastle was taken to hospital after a car flipped over in the collision.

Police and paramedics were called to the northbound road near to junction 78 at Fawdon just before 7pm on Easter Monday after a car flipped over onto its roof and landed on the grass verge.

Several cars and a lorry had stopped at the side of the road as drivers went to help but police confirmed that only one car was involved in the crash.

Two ambulances were called to the scene and a woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

However nobody in the car was believed to be seriously injured.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 7pm on April 13, police received a report of a one vehicle collision on the A1 near Kingston Park.

"It was reported that a car was on its roof and all inside were walking and outside the vehicle.

"A woman was taken to hospital by road as a precaution but no injuries were reported."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6.59pm on April 13 to a road traffic collision northbound on Fawdon Lane in Newcastle.

"We dispatched two double-crewed ambulance and transported a female patient to the RVI."

One lane was closed while the emergency services and Highways England traffic officers were on the scene.

The road was fully reopened at around 8.15pm after the car was recovered and removed from the verge.
