Woman taken to hospital after car flipped on its side on Low Fell road

A woman has been taken to hospital after being rescued by emergency services when her car flipped onto its side in Low Fell .

Firefighters and paramedics were called to Station Road at 2.15pm on Wednesday to reports of a vehicle having overturned.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews from Gateshead and Birtley to the scene who used special tools to cut a woman from her car.

Firefighters were assisted by a Hazardous Area Response Team and one ambulance crew who managed to release the woman, who was complaining of chest pains.

She was transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead for further treatment.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called out at 2.15pm to a car that had rolled onto its side at Station Road in Low Fell.

"We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team and one ambulance to the scene.

"One female patient was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment due to her having chest pains."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman offered advice to drivers during the torrential rain to hit the North East.

She said: "With more heavy rain forecast please take extra care on the roads: - turn your lights on, slow down and leave more room between the car in front."
