Woman taken to hospital after being rescued from Stalybridge canal

A woman has been taken to hospital after being rescued from a canal in Tameside.

Emergency services were called out to Stalybridge town centre on Monday night (April 27) following reports of a female in the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Armentieres Square, near Trinity Street.

Firefighters from across Greater Manchester were sent out to the scene after 9.30pm, while paramedics attended, including North West Ambulance Service's (NWAS) hazardous area response team (HART).

Eyewitnesses also reported a large police presence in the area while the rescue operation was underway.

Crews, including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's (GMFRS) technical response unit and the water incident unit, spent around an hour at the scene before the person was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "Just after 9:30pm on Monday (April 26), two fire engines from Ashton-under-Lyne and Mossley fire stations, as well as the technical response unit from Leigh and the water incident unit from Heywood, were called to reports of a person in water near to Trinity Street, Stalybridge.

"Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and, working with colleagues from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), used a nine-metre ladder and rope rescue equipment to rescue one person from the water.

"GMFRS crews were at the scene for around one hour."

A spokesperson for NWAS added: "We were called to an incident at the canal near Trinity Street in Stalybridge at 9.47pm last night. We mobilised HART and an emergency ambulance.

"A female patient was taken to hospital."
