Woman taken to court over Greggs wrapper she dropped more than a decade ago

A woman was shocked when she was hauled to court over litter she dropped more than a decade ago.

According to Mirror Online , Grace Firth received a court summons in December 2018, referring to a 'historical debt' - and this letter was the first she knew about it.

Ms Firth was tucking into a snack from Greggs and the paper bag it came in ended up on the floor.

The BBC reports that she had been issued the fine way back in August 2009, but didn't realise as the mail had been sent to her mum's house.

She was fined £175 and ordered to pay £180 costs and a £15 victim surcharge, all in her absence.

The Stockport student, 32, told Stockport Magistrates' Court: "Any mail for me was returned to sender or thrown away."

Magistrates questioned whether an error had been made with the supposed date of the littering offence.

Yesterday (February 25), magistrates decided to scrap the original bill of £180. Instead, they reduced the fine to £40, plus the £15 victim surcharge.

Chairman Edward Tasker said: "You've been very fair and very honest.

"Thank you for being so honest and for turning up."
