Woman taken to A&E after serious collision on the A19

A woman has been taken to hospital after a serious crash on the A19 in County Durham.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene near Peterlee on Thursday afternoon after a car collided with the central reservation.

The road was closed in both directions to allow the air ambulance to land and motorists were told to avoid the area.

Paramedics took one female patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital's A&E by road.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 3.20pm to a road traffic collision on the A19 southbound.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, two Hazardous Area Response Teams, a specialist paramedic and a rapid response paramedic.

"We also requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"A female patient was transported, by road, to the Sunderland Royal Hospital A&E."

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary added: "We were called at 3.20pm today after a car collided with the central reservation on the southbound carriageway of the A19 between the A1086 and B1320 junctions near Peterlee.

"The Great North Air Ambulance were also called to the incident to treat the sole female occupant of the vehicle."

The road reopened shortly before 6pm.
