Woman swims to safety after car plunges off cliff into the sea

A woman has been detained under the Mental Health Act  after her car plunged over a cliff and into the sea.

The vehicle ended up almost fully-submerged and the motorist was forced to swim to the shore at Limeslade Bay, in Swansea.

A volunteer RNLI crew from Milford Haven rushed to the scene in Mumbles at around 6am this morning, reports Wales Online.

Arriving 15 minutes later, they found the 37-year-old driver, from Townhill, had managed to escape and get to safety.

She then approached members of the public for help before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

South Wales Police also attended the scene, and there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

A statement released by South Wales Police said: “At 6am this morning emergency services in Swansea were called to an incident at Limeslade Bay where a car had entered the sea.

“A 37-year-old woman from the Townhill area was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to Morriston Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.”

Mumbles Lifeboat second coxswain Richie Webborn said: "There wasn’t much to identify the location other than a small amount of debris which lead a trail to the bottom of the cliff just below Fortes Ice cream parlour."

After making it to the shore, the woman made her way up the bank where police were waiting.
