Woman 'swears by' simple coin hack to get rid of flies that has worked 'for years'

House flies are unfortunately becoming more and more prominent as we enter into summer.

The annoying pests are driven inside when the weather gets warm and they're attracted to any food that might be lying around the house. At times, it may seem like the swarms can be impossible to get rid of.

But according to one fan of the cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, there's no need to rely on harmful chemicals to kill the flies, and all you need instead is a few coins and a sandwich bag.

The Express reports that one woman in search of advice posted on one of many Facebook groups inspired by the cleaning influencer.

She asked: “What's the best thing to get rid of flies? Live near a cow farm and they are starting already."

One response told her to get a sandwich bag, some pennies and some water. Then, fill the bag with the coins and water and hang it near a window, as it apparently makes the flies steer clear.

The comment read: “Put a few pennies in a clear bag in water and hang it up ... (you need to change the water every now and then though). Flies and wasps think it's a wasps nest and stay away!

“I did this today, I hung it in the centre of the French doors into the conservatory. I’ve only seen one fly today, well worth a try!"

Another commenter said: “Put some copper coins in a food bag with water and hang them on door frames. Works a treat, I have had no flies in my house for years !!!”

The reason this is so effective is because flies have compound vision, and they see things differently to the way we do.

Flies will see the bag of water multiple times at once, and with the pennies inside, it creates a rainbow prism that hurts the flies' eyes,

Others suggest using fly curtains, especially on a back door, which are really effective if you have a pet that often likes to go in and out of the house.

One commenter said: “Fly curtains brilliant I don't get them.” Another wrote: “Old fashioned but I did this today. Helped immediately. Plus my dog can still get in and out.”

And experts say that the most effective fly repellent is keeping your home as free from waste as possible.

Walter Murphy a pest control specialist at PriceYourJob.co.uk said: “The best way to get rid of flies is by making sure your home is clean and free of any sugary substances, rotting meat or other waste. This will involve wiping down surfaces and emptying the bin as often as possible to prevent flies from lingering in your home.

"You can also use natural repellents, such as apple cider vinegar, to get rid of flies."
