Woman surprised by note left on her doorstep from stranger

A woman was surprised after discovering an unexpected gift left on her doorstep from a stranger.

The woman, who lives in St Helens, opened her front door on Sunday to find a note and small gift had been placed outside her home.

The St Helens woman found a box of chocolates and a thank you note which had been left by a stranger as a token of appreciation for the water the homeowner leaves out for passing dogs.

The woman, who first started putting a bowl of water out for dogs during the first lockdown, said she has gained 'regulars' who will often stop off at the home on their travels to rehydrate.

Writing about her doorstop find on a community Facebook page, the woman wrote: “Just to say thank you to whoever left chocolates and a thank you note on our doorstep this morning for leaving fresh water daily for the passing dog walkers.

"It was much appreciated. Didn't get to see who left them but your note said Domino and Molly are grateful.

"You're very welcome."

The messaged was liked almost 500 times and ended up reaching the stranger who was responsible for the note and chocolates.

Replying to the post with a photo of the dogs in question, a young woman tagged her mum in the comments and said she was was the owner of Domino and Molly.

The mum then responded saying: “Awe, yes it was me!

"We regularly walk past going up to the park with Dom and Molly and it’s lovely that it's always there. They know when they’re coming up to the house now and start to pull on their leads to get to the bowl!

"Thank you for thinking of the passing Pooches. We sadly lost one of our dogs Pippa on Christmas Day and coming by for a walk since then has made me smile x"

The original poster replied to the kind stranger, adding that the chocolates are her husband's "absolute fav".

Thanking the woman, she said: "It was such a lovely thing to do.

"We have two dogs and since lockdown there was so many dogs walking past wanting a drink after a long walk so we kept it up.

"The chocolate is my [husband's] absolute fav. So sorry for your loss at Christmas - as a dog lover sending hugs and love your way xx"

Other locals commented on how "lovely" the act was, to which the poster said the stranger’s gift ‘made her day’.
