Woman suffers serious injuries in head-on collision

A WOMAN suffered serious leg injuries in a head-on collision at Tomago on Sunday.

A Northern NSW Helicopter Rescue Service spokesperson said the woman, aged in her 40s, "was trapped for some time before being freed from the car".

The two-car incident on Tomago Road happened shortly after midday on Sunday.

The woman was treated at the scene by emergency services before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The crash came after Newcastle's police commander urged people to take care over the long-weekend, the first public holiday period since COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed. Double demerit penalties are in force until 11.59pm on Monday for speeding, drink-driving, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet-related offences.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said drivers could "expect to see plenty of officers out on our streets, enforcing the road rules and ensuring that all road users reach their destination safely".
