Police, fire, ambulance and coastguard crews rushed to Eastham Ferry in Wirral yesterday afternoon after reports a woman had fallen down a cliff.

A number of response vehicles attended the rescue - including two fire engines, the coastguard, the Marine Fire One rescue boat and search and rescue teams.

Fire services arrived on scene at 3.46pm and set up rope access gear to reach the woman who they said had fallen approximately 30 foot to the beach below.

A paramedic assessed the woman who was ‘conscious and breathing’ while the crew used the access rope and a basket stretcher to retrieve her from the beach.

Fire crews then worked with HM Coastguard teams to bring the woman to safety.

She was taken to hospital with injuries the ambulance service described as 'serious'.

Crews were present at the scene until 6.04pm.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service confirmed: "We responded after reports a woman had fallen down a cliff, with a 999 call received at 15.25.

"She was rescued with HART, the fire service, and the coast guard all on scene."

One eye witness said: “Rescue workers are rappelling into the Mersey.

“Huge emergency presence there. Search boats in the water as well. We were walking dogs down there and were a bit perplexed.”
