Woman suffers facial injuries at Melbourne Royal Show as roller-coaster ride is shut down

An incident at Melbourne Royal Show has left a woman with critical facial injuries.

Patrons were stuck on the Rebel Coaster ride while ambulance officers treated the woman before she was taken to hospital.

The woman, 26, may have walked onto the ride's tracks about 5:45pm on Sunday to retrieve a dropped phone, a spokeswoman said.

A crime scene was set up at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale to determine how the woman was hit by the ride's carriage.

Organisers from the Melbourne Royal Show later released a statement saying an investigation was underway.

"We are working closely with the ride operator, WorkSafe Victoria and Victoria Police to investigate the issue further," the statement said.

"However, we can confirm that no-one has fallen from the ride."

Melbourne Royal Show says the ride has been closed for the foreseeable future.

Police remain on site and are urging anyone with information on the incident to come forward.

The accident happened on the fourth day of the show, which had not operated since 2019 due to coronavirus restrictions.
