Woman suffering with delirium after infection that left her in hospital stabbed her ex-husband

A woman stabbed her ex-husband due to "delirium secondary to an infection" after leaving hospital, a court has heard.

Swansea Crown Court heard how Lisa Griffiths went to stay at her ex-husband John Griffiths' home in Ynyswen, Felinfoel, Llanelli, after being released from hospital following a period of ill health.

Prosecutor Robin Rouch explained how Griffiths and her former husband had continued to be involved in each other's lives following their separation and she decided to stay with him after leaving hospital due to her condition. But on June 23 the 52-year-old stabbed him in the chest.

Paramedics were called and they treated Mr Griffiths then took him to hospital. He was found to have a single stab wound to his upper chest area but the wound later closed.

Griffiths was detained by police and six kitchen knives were removed from the property. She was found to have a large laceration to her wrist which she told officers was self-inflicted.

Explaining her actions she told police: "I didn't want to hurt him but I wanted him to have a bit of the pain I have felt all day."

Griffiths, of previous clean character, was taken to Ammanford police station where she admitted her actions against her husband, whom she had been together with for 20 years. She later admitted unlawful wounding.

Mitigating Paul Hobson said Griffiths was "in a vulnerable position" at the time of the offence and encouraged Judge Catherine Richards to consider the contents of a psychiatric report which had been prepared.

Judge Richards sentenced Griffiths, of Wern Road in Llanelli, to an 18-month community order with a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

She added: "Everybody accepts that you are culpable for your actions but it's clear your delirium secondary to infection caused you to act in this manner."
