Woman suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a street sign following a collision

A woman suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a street sign following a collision on a busy Bolton road.

The driver of a van hit a street sign which then hit a pedestrian, police say.

The driver is understood to have left the scene.

Greater Manchester Police said the injured woman was taken to hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Officers were called to Albert Road, in Farnworth, Bolton, just before 4pm on Wednesday afternoon (January 15).

A force spokesman said: “We were called at 3.48pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Albert Road.

“It appears a vehicle has hit a street sign that has then hit a pedestrian.

“The pedestrian suffered serious injuries but they are not thought to be life threatening.

“The vehicle did not stop at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing."

Albert Road remains closed in both directions tonight between Harrowby Street and Queen Street.

The road has been closed since around 5.15pm, which is affecting traffic in the area.
