Woman stunned by value of 'magic' broken clock on Antiques Roadshow

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned when she learned the value of a broken clock she had grown up with all her life.

In tonight's episode, which was a repeat, Fiona Bruce presented the show from Crathes Castle in Aberdeenshire.

Items brought in to be valued included a royal portrait which turned out to be a fake, a tiny bowl with a giant price tag, a hat once given to Ronald Reagan and a walking stick which belonged to Scottish music hall star, Harry Lauder.

But one little clock left its owner stunned when it was valued.

The woman spoke to expert Richard Price, who said the clock was special because of its "magic name, that superb jeweller, Cartier".

The Cartier clock's owner said: "My grandmother was left it by an actress called Lily Elsie who was the original Merry Widow [a popular London play] in the early 1920s, I think, so that's how it came into our family.

"It was my grandmother's, then my mother's and now it belongs to me."

She revealed she didn't remember the clock ever working while it was at her mother's home and said it was more of an "ornament" rather than a working clock.

Richard Price praised the deep purple enamel of the clock and the "typical Cartier diamonds", branding the clock "superb".

He added: "You really should have it restored, it's a lovely thing."

Richard explained the popularity of Cartier products had "zoomed", which would contribute to the clock's value.

The expert said it could retail "in excess of £30,000" before adding, "in a top retail outlet, they could be asking for £50,000."

The woman was stunned and said: "Gosh, goodness me."

Viewers were equally shocked with the value of the little clock and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

They were valued at £1,500 to £1,800.
