A woman has been struck by a van in an early morning hit and run in a Scots town.

Cops in Greenock are appealing for witnesses after the 29-year-old was hit by the vehicle on Gateside Avenue at around 8.50am yesterday morning.

She had been speaking to a man in a grey van parked opposite the Lady Alice primary school.

The woman was hit by the vehicle as he drove away before making off in the direction of Inverkip Street.

The woman attended Inverclyde Royal Hospital to be checked over and was later released.

Police have since launched a probe into the incident and anyone with any information is being urged to come forward.

Constable Liam McGowan of Greenock Police Station said: “We are carrying out enquiries into the circumstances surrounding this incident and checking local CCTV footage for more information.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed this incident take place to contact officers through 101 quoting ref no 1107 of 9 December.”
