Woman strangles sleeping husband in Surat

SURAT: The death of a 41-year-old Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) sweeper has turned out to be a murder executed by his own wife, who was fed up with his alcoholism.

Following revelation of strangulation in the postmortem report, Lalgatge police detained Meenakshi, wife of deceased Bhavesh Solanki, and will press charges of murder against her.

After killing him, she raised a false alarm for help and took him to the hospital where doctors declared him dead on admission.

Solanki lived with his family at Chummalis ni Chali in Kajipura area. At around 4pm on Sunday, Meenakshi alerted neighbours saying that Bhavesh had fallen unconscious on the bed. Family members and neighbours rushed him to hospital.

Bhavesh’s brother Mahesh filed a complaint on Monday evening. When police questioned Meenakshi, she broke down and confessed to the crime.

Police said Bhavesh was addicted to liquor and irregular in his job too. As a result, there were bitter fights between him and his wife. Overcome by rage after a fight, Meenakshi strangled him when he was sleeping.
