Woman stopped vehicle break-in

CUFFED: Travis Gale after his arrest at Newcastle West on Sunday.

A MAN accused of breaking into an 85-year-old woman's car at an underground shopping centre car park at Newcastle West on Sunday was only released from jail in February and is currently serving an intensive corrections order, Newcastle Local Court has heard.

The elderly woman told police she returned to her car about 3pm to find Travis Damien Gale, 24, of Mccullys Gap north-east of Muswellbrook, leaning into her open door. Gale had used a knife to cut a 10-centimetre slit into the soft top of her convertible before damaging the steering column and stealing the woman's garage door remote. The woman told him to "get away", went and got security, the police were called and, after viewing CCTV, Gale was arrested.

He applied for bail on Monday, but it was refused with Magistrate Andrew Miller saying he could not trust that Gale would abide by any conditions. He said Gale was serving an intensive corrections order until August for similar matters. The matter was adjourned until July 6.
