Woman being driven between two hospitals pulled out knife and stabbed men on M5

A woman stabbed two carers in the neck while being driven near Bristol.

Rebecca Churchman was being driven on the M5 between hospitals in Birmingham and HaverfordWest when she produced a flick knife from her handbag and stabbed the two men.

The 35-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to wounding Peter Wilson and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on David McCarthy in June last year.

Dr Alison Witts recommended Churchman, who has been receiving care at a clinic in Bridgend, would most benefit from a hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

Churchman told Bristol Crown Court she thought prison, rather than hospital, was the best option for her.

Judge Martin Picton told the court: "I don't see a prison setting in any way appropriate for her.

"She has mental health difficulties.

"I sympathise with her position.

"I understand her frustration.

"Her perspective has developed over time and she will, in time, have a perspective of the overall picture.

"I hope her transition into the community is sooner rather than later."

James Ward, prosecuting, told the court in June last year Churchman arrived at Birmingham Airport, with an expired passport, and tried to buy a flight ticket.

When she declared she would like to go anywhere as she was "trying to escape an aura" it was clear she was unwell and she was arrested.

Mr Ward said at no time was her handbag searched and when she was being driven between hospitals she produced the blade and stabbed the carers.

Mr Wilson needed stitches to a 2cm long wound and Mr McCarthy sustained a 5mm long cut which did not need treatment.
