Woman stabbed in the neck fights for life as man arrested

A woman is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck.

Emergency services were called just after 9.30am on Friday to Virginia Street in Southport after reports of a woman having been stabbed several times.

The woman, 48, was taken to hospital in critical condition and requires surgery.

A 50-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

The incident is being treated as domestic-related and detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Enquiries are ongoing and police said safeguarding procedures were being carried out by specialist officers.

Detective inspector Paula Furlong said: “Our enquiries remain ongoing and I would continue to ask anyone with information which could assist our investigation to contact us.

“We take the issue of domestic abuse very seriously and will continue to work alongside our partners to identify the best way to tackle it.

“I would encourage anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse to have the courage to report it to us and we will support you in every way we can.

“Similarly I would ask if you are aware of someone who is a victim of domestic abuse – whether that be a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour - please contact us so that we can take positive action and offer them the support that they need.”
