Woman spots 'crazy' driver with sofa in the back seat of a convertible

A motorist was shocked to see a "crazy" driver transporting a large red sofa in the back seat of a car.

Amanda Garthwaite was travelling along the A611 just outside Hucknall when she noticed the Volkswagen Passat convertible carrying the unusual load.

The 42-year-old export administrator told Nottinghamshire Live that she didn't think it could be considered "a safe driving situation".

"The crazy stuff you see driving around Hucknall," she said.

"At first I thought it was funny, which is still the case, but being serious I noticed the load didn't seem to be strapped in or secured in any way.

"We couldn't see the driver at all, so he or she must have been reliant on their wing mirrors.

"It was certainly an unusual sight on the roads but I'm not convinced it would be considered a safe driving situation."

Transporting furniture in a car can lead to a driver being charged with a serious motoring offence, such as dangerous driving, for example, if the item was not strapped down.

Section 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 states that “a person is... to be regarded as driving dangerously... if it would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving the vehicle in its current state would be dangerous".
