Woman spends less than €30 a week on food shopping with one thrifty tip

A woman has shared how she manages to spend less than €30 a week on her grocery shopping - by never setting foot inside the supermarket.

The woman named Sara revealed her secret in the Facebook group Money Saving Hints, Tips and Ideas and had plenty of other thrifty suggestions to save money.

For her grocery shopping, Sara uses the Click and Collect service at her local supermarket to avoid being tempted by things she doesn't need.

"I organise my [shopping] so I collect after I've been to the gym, trained and had my free shower so it's more fuel efficient!" she said.

Sara also saves by batch cooking all her meals, eating vegetarian meals on some days, and using up leftovers.

"I don't throw any food away, and I don't buy until I've used everything," she said.

"I buy better quality food but less meat and I use the Tesco app for recipes, which is great as you type in what ingredients you have and it will create a dish for you!"

She's also thrifty when it comes to her electricity bills, which has left her €340 in credit.

"I boil the kettle in the morning if I'm at home for the day, and fill a large two-litre flask, so if I want tea etc then I take water from the flask.

"It's cheaper than boiling just the amount you need six times a day, and any left over water gets used for my dishes at night."

"If I use my tumble dryer, which is rare, then I save hang overnight, then dry in the morning for about 15 minutes. I then use the condensed water for the floor washing bucket."

She added: "I do two proper washing loads a week on a hotter wash, one dark and one light, rather than daily short washes.

"I haven't had the heating on unless I really need to. I use a dehumidifier all the time and I have an electric blanket on the sofa that is covered with a blanked that I sit on, and then I have an electric throw to cover me. I also have an electric blanket on my bed, and I bought an Eskimo Snoogle. It was so worth it!"
