Woman sparks debate with plan to wear black to wedding despite being 'funeral colour'

It's an unwritten rule that guests must turn up in their finest and brightest attire to a wedding. Arguably, the more colour - the better.

While it's not set in stone, the array of colours contribute to the happiness of the special day. That's why one woman has been left contemplating her decision to wear black to a wedding as it's stereotypically a 'funeral colour'.

Taking to popular forum site Reddit, the anonymous user shared her concerns as her partner questioned whether it was appropriate to wear the dark colour to a marital ceremony.

She explained: "My boyfriend and I are going to our first wedding as a couple in a couple of months. His co-worker is getting married and we've both been invited to the reception."

"I have never met this co-worker or the bride," she added.

The woman went on: "I identify as pretty alternative; I wear a lot of black clothes, dark eyeliner and I have tattoos. So naturally, I was talking to my boyfriend about buying a nice new black dress for the wedding.

"He chuckled and said in disbelief 'you're not going to wear black to a wedding, are you?'

"I know that wearing white to a wedding is off-limits, but I've not heard anything bad about wearing black before."

Seeking advice, she questioned: "I get that it's more of a funeral colour, but surely I won't be taking any attention away from the bride if I'm dressed in black? Any insight would be awesome!"

Since sharing her thread online, her post has raked in over 150 comments to date.

Taking to the comment section, one person wrote: "I'm a big fan of navy for weddings. But there's a reason that a 'little black dress' is allegedly a wardrobe staple."

Meanwhile, someone else said: "It's ok. I'd say it depends on the style of the dress. If you'll go looking like Morticia or Wednesday Addams, some might not like it and yes, you'll be drawing attention.

"But if it's a classic black gown (e.g. Audrey's in Breakfast at Tiffany's), I don't see a problem with it," they added.
