Woman slams Renfrewshire Council for failing to empty her bin 12 weeks in a row

A Paisley woman has hit out at Renfrewshire Council after her bins were not emptied for 12 weeks.

Katrina Martin, of Rowan Street, is supposed to have bin workers fetch her bins from her garden before emptying them due to health difficulties.

But, from June 15, she has had to repeatedly call after her bins were not emptied, despite also being on a supervision order to make sure it is done.

The repeated error has been branded as “absolutely shocking” by Labour councillor Carolann Davidson, who said quick action has to be taken to ensure the problem is solved.

Katrina spoke to the Express in 2019 regarding the same issue, which caused a problem with rats in the quiet residential street.

She told the Express there was “no excuse” for the waste bins being missed repeatedly yet again.

Katrina said: “It is really frustrating to come out every time to see they have not been done.#

“I can’t get them down the stairs because I have health problems, so that’s why I have assisted uplift.

“They are in the front garden, so it’s not like they are out of the way.

“I didn’t know if it was because sometimes my neighbours don’t put their bins out, so when they drive along the street they think there’s none to pick up.

“One council staff member also said it may have been because I didn’t have the correct sticker on my bin.

“But someone from the council has been in touch with me and told me that wasn’t an excuse as they should have a list.

“So I don’t know why it keeps happening, but I have been told they are looking into it so, fingers crossed it can be resolved.”

Paisley East and Central ward councillor Ms Davidson has now informed the director of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment board in a bid to solve the three-month long problem

Cllr Caroline Davidson (Renfrewshire Council)

She said: “Ms Martin first contacted me on June 15 as her bins were constantly not getting emptied.

“She is on the list for assisted uplift, which means that the bin operatives are supposed to lift the bins from her front garden, empty them and put them back, but this is just not happening.

“She has had to call me almost every week since the middle of June as her bins haven’t been emptied, despite the department putting her on a 12-week monitoring list on June 21.

“Since then, her bin has only once been uplifted on the day it should be.

“Almost weekly she has had to call me just to get emptied. This lack of service is absolutely shocking, but, unfortunately, not isolated.

“ I am constantly getting complaints about bins not being emptied right across the whole of Ward 5.

“This is even more concerning due to the rat epidemic that we have in Paisley, which is one of Katrina’s and my own main concerns, as she has had rats in the past due to bins not being emptied.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “We’ve visited Ms Martin this week to ensure that her assisted collection takes place as planned.

“We identified some issues that had caused her bins to be missed, but these have now been rectified and should resolve any issues moving forward.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and remain committed to providing a high quality collection to all our residents in Renfrewshire.”
