Woman shows she has 'no bad blood' with husband's ex-wife by giving her a kidney

A woman has shown that there is no bad blood between her and her husband's ex-wife by donating a kidney to the woman to save her life.

Last year, Debby Neal-Strickland was due to marry Jim Merthe when the pair discovered that the man's former wife, Mylaen Merthe, was seriously ill and needed a transplant.

The former couple had two children, Jim and Samantha, but the son wasn't a match and the daughter was pregnant - so Mylaen's life was hanging in the balance.

But Debby stepped up and traded in her wedding dress for a hospital gown, and agreed to donate to help save Mylaen - and now the pair are 'kidney sisters'.

Debby and Mylaen are now friends, despite both being married to the same man at one time or another (Inside Edition)

Speaking to Inside Edition, Debby was asked if she hesitated at all, and she said: "No ma'am, I wanted this family to have their grandmother."

“This was supposed to happen.”

Mylaen, who had been divorced from Jim for nearly 20 years, said she was "shocked" to learn who the donor was, and is now recovering nicely after the operation at Tampa General Hospital.

She added: "She's like, my life saver.

Meanwhile, it was previously revealed that a kidney transplant recipient is still living healthily 50 years on.

Michael Phillips was aged 21 when he underwent the transplant op back in 1971 and his donor kidney was only expected to last 10 to 15 years but is still going strong.

And recently a teenage girl played her first football game after a heart transplant – and lifted the league trophy for her team.
