Woman shot in home invasion; man shot on South Side

May 06--A woman was seriously injured after being shot when three men broke into her apartment in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood as other daytime shootings left another man injured, police said.

The woman was in her garden apartment on the 5900 block of South Kenneth Avenue at 4 p.m. when the three men broke into her home, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman, citing preliminary information.

The 26-year-old woman was shot in the chest and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, said Sweeney. After the shooting the men fled the scene.

Cristian Uruena, 16, who lives on the next block, said he was walking home from Curie High School and saw a sedan parked on the west corner of West 60th Street and South Kenneth Avenue.

He saw two men get out of the car and open the front door. He said one was wearing a hat and the other was wearing "something blue."

"I thought they were friends of the people who lived there," Uruena said.

Uruena went inside for about five minutes and went back outside, when he saw police vehicles arrive at the house.

"I'm kind of surprised," he said. "My mind is blown."

At 5:43 p.m. on the 3000 block of South Homan Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, a 20-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg, said Sweeney.

The man was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital where he was in good condition, said Sweeney. The man was on the sidewalk when a vehicle drove up to him and fired shots before fleeing, said Sweeney.
