A woman was shot dead in front of her toddler in a supermarket car park after an altercation with a stranger in South Carolina.

Alexandria Borys, 26, was loading shopping into her car outside grocery store Kroger when she began arguing with a woman at around 2pm local time on Tuesday.

Christina Harrison, 23, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Borys in the back during the confrontation in the town of Irmo.

Borys’ children – a 2-year-old and an infant – were in the car when she was shot.

Is it not clear what sparked the heated argument between the two women.

Harrison fled the scene in her white Ford but later turned herself into police.

She was arrested and charged with both murder and unlawfully carrying a pistol in addition to other offences.

"Unfortunately, this is a situation where tempers flared, and someone let anger get the best of them.  One rash decision has impacted the lives of two families and countless others who witnessed this tragic event." Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale said.

"Senseless is the only word I can think of to describe what happened today."
