Woman shot by police still in hospital more than ten months later

A woman shot by police in Toxteth remains in hospital ten months later.

Sonia Price was hit by a bullet in her lower abdomen and left fighting for her life following the firearms discharge on the streets of Toxteth in July.

The then-54-year-old was seen holding a knife, behaving erratically and making threats to members of the public who tried to get out of her way around the North Hill Street area.

Today, The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has been in charge of the investigation due to the shooting involving officers, said Ms Price remained in hospital.

It is unclear how serious her injuries now are.

The IOPC also revealed they had completed their enquiry which concluded that police had not committed a criminal offence or breached the standards of professional behaviour, on July 9, last year.

A report is expected to be released within the next couple of months.

An IOPC spokesman told the ECHO: “Our investigation into the non-fatal shooting of a woman in Toxteth by Merseyside Police in July 2020 is now complete.

"The woman remains in hospital.

“Our investigators gathered witness statements, CCTV and footage of the incident and took accounts from the two officers involved, who were both treated as witnesses.

"There was no indication that the officers had committed a criminal offence or breached the standards of professional behaviour.

"We also reviewed the policies and guidance that cover the deployment of armed officers.

“Details of our findings will be published in due course.

“We continue to keep Merseyside Police and the woman’s family informed of our progress.

"Our thoughts remain with the woman and anyone affected by this incident.”

The ECHO has approached Merseyside Police for comment.

Just before 2pm, on July 9, armed Ms Price confronted passers-by, including a 30-year-old mum and her 10-year-old daughter, and a young man on a bike.

In the chaotic scenes, one mum told how knife-wielding Ms Price was within "touching distance" of her with her 10-year-old daughter, saying: "I'm gonna stab yas."

The 30-year-old watched as she pursued a young man on his bike, threatening to attack him with the weapon.

But when he cycled away, on North Hill Street, the woman started to follow the mum and her young daughter, very closely, for about 15 seconds, they reported.

Later, after the parent-of-one had escaped to her sister's home and locked the door, Ms Price was shot in the lower abdomen by police.

A video emerged of her handcuffed, lying on the ground, after being shot.

The ECHO has previously revealed how Ms Price was moved into a first floor flat on Darrell Drive, Toxteth, the day before the shooting.

The mum was seen sitting on the floor, close to a bottle of wine, with two people, said to be her carers at that time.

She appeared to be drunk, it was said, and was aggressive.

The next day, July 9, Ms Price suddenly knocked on the front flat door where an elderly resident lives, and started to shout outside.

He didn't let her inside, but she left a scribbled handwritten note, which contained unpleasant comments and hostility, the 80-year-old said.

The note was passed to police officers when they attended his home.

After Ms Price left the neighbour's front door, loud shouting and smashing could be heard nearby, and items were flung from a window from where Ms Price had been briefly housed.

They included a wine bottle, a flower vase or container, and kitchen or household implements.

Shortly after that, Ms Price left the accommodation and she was shot.
