Woman shocked as airline charges her £2,200 to check in a single suitcase

Anyone who's travelled will know the frustration that comes with having to pay extra to check-in your bags - but one woman got quite the shock when an airline charged her over £2,000 to check in a single suitcase.

Jannine Meyers was travelling from Auckland Airport in New Zealand last month, ready to board a flight with Jetstar.

She went to the check-in desk with her extra bag, expecting to pay $45NZ - the equivalent of £22 - to do so.

When Jannine handed over her credit card, $4500 dollars (approximately £2,200), was charged to the card instead in error.

The travelling Kiwi said she was told of the mistake by a supervisor before getting on the flight, but then some issues began to occur.

Jannine claimed that several staff members at the budget airline, including the check-in supervisor and manager, tried to issue a refund, but they "seemed unsure of what they were doing", Stuff reported.

She claims that an hour later she was told that the money would be refunded in 10 to 15 days, but was not given a receipt or a written promise of the refund. Heading to her flight, she said all she could do was "have faith that they had successfully processed the refund", but added that her "gut instinct told me otherwise".

15 days later, she claimed she still had not received the money despite having made several calls to Jetstar.

However, the New Zealander is expecting her money to be returned to her within the next few days.

She added: "It was an extremely frustrating experience. A $4455 discrepancy is no small error."

A Jetstar spokesperson told Stuff that they sincerely apologised for the refund delay.

“Our finance team processed the reimbursement yesterday and as a gesture of goodwill, we have offered her a travel voucher," they said.

The Mirror has contacted Jetstar for further comment.
