People have been left divided after a woman shared her odd sandwich filling combination on TikTok. 20-year-old Katie McBurney posted a clip on the platform of her eating the snack which she claimed was part of her childhood but had left her friends bemused.
The combo in question is a far cry from the humble ham cheese or BLT and may even be more strange than these sandwiches served up at a former Cardiff newsagents. As Belfast Live reports, to many viewers' horror, Katie admitted that her sarnie of choice is - wait for it - apple and Mars bar.
In the video - which has been watched over 45,000 times - the student from Ballymoney in Northern Ireland told viewers that she had previously thought the sandwich filling was ordinary, but was left amazed after talking to one of her friends in England who had never heard of the combination before. "Okay, I didn't realise until very recently, apple and Mars bar sandwiches aren't normal," she said. "Is this a Northern Irish thing? I mentioned it to a few of my friends in England and I was amazed that no one else had really had apple and Mars bar sandwiches. They were like: 'no Katie, what are you on about?'".
"They were part of my life growing up. You always just had an apple and Mars bar sandwich. A lot of people are going to think I'm crazy for this but they are so good."
Slicing up the apple and a single Mars bar, Katie continued: "I haven't had one in ages so I thought, you know what, I'll treat myself. The only problem is you have to make them and eat them almost straight away because the apples go a bit weird. I don't put anything like mayonnaise or anything like that on the bread so I'm quite weird that way because I know most people do.
"Is this something that you've had before or am I just crazy? Is this really a no-go for a lot of people? A lot of people don't have them? Because why? They're so good." Taking a big bite out of the freshly prepared sandwich, Katie was pleased with her culinary efforts as she claimed: "That is perfection".
However, viewers on TikTok weren't so convinced, with some branding the sandwich "vile" and "wrong". One person wrote: "I actually might be sick," while another added: "This has to be a joke". A third commented: "Sounds rotten," with another viewer writing: "There is so much wrong with this".

Despite others saying that the combination was "definitely not a Northern Irish thing," however, some viewers leapt to Katie's defence and claimed that the sandwich really was as nice as she had made out. "I'm Irish and me and my dad love this!" wrote one, with Katie replying: "So glad I'm not alone!". Another commented: "I used to eat this all the time as a child!!! And I'm from Ballymena," while a third wrote: "I am from Northern Ireland and you are not crazy, I had them growing up and still love them."
Some converted viewers said they were going to try the recipe for themselves, while others even chipped in with their own 'unique' combinations. "Hear me out, Bounty bar and beans on toast," wrote one, while another suggested: "Try banana simmered in beans. Yummy."
After the video went viral, Katie told BelfastLive: ""I don’t even remember the first time I had one! They were always just a staple in our house. It might have been because I used to be a fussy eater and the only way to get me to eat sandwiches was to stuff Mars bars in there as well! When I do have them, I’ll have them for a few days straight and then won’t have them again for months!"
"When I was in England at university I made one and all my housemates thought I was crazy, so I messaged my friends from back home and most of them said, 'Yeah, of course I’ve had a Mars bar and apple sandwich!' So from that I just assumed it must be a Northern Irish thing! I can’t say I’m really surprised by the comments, I knew that it would probably be controversial but I definitely didn’t realise people would have such strong opinions on it!"
