Woman shares little-known hack to keeping bananas looking fresher for longer

A perfectly ripe, yellowish green banana is perhaps the perfect healthy snack.

But the chances are that before too long, at least one of them will go brown before you get the chance to eat them all.

Now there's an answer to end your brown banana worries, reports the MEN.

That's because a member of the group Reduce Your Supermarket Spend Facebook page has revealed their method to keep them looking and tasting fresh.

Hundreds of people responded saying they had never heard of the hack, and she posted a photo to prove her method.

But while one had gone brown, the other one with foil around the stem was still fresh. Apparently, cling film has the same effect.

And while you can cover the stems of a whole bunch, it's separating the bananas and wrapping the stems individually which proves most effective.

The lifehacker website  explains the science behind it, saying: "Bananas, like many fruits, release ethylene gas naturally, which controls enzymatic browning and ripening of not just itself, but other fruits nearby.

"Much of that offgassing takes place at the stem - or the crown - of the banana. By wrapping the crown of a bunch, you slow down the ripening process a bit. For the best effect, separate the bananas and wrap them individually."

So now you know, you need never see another brown banana again.
