Woman shares how she got £30 worth of Greggs goodies for £5.90

Money conscious shoppers have been using an online app to reserve and pick up selections of food from popular high street cafes and restaurants at discounted prices.

In a recent post on social media, someone shared their bag that should have amounted to around £30 of food but was bought for just £5.90.

The saving was made using an app called 'Too Good To Go' that allows customers in Scotland to buy food at the end of the working day that would otherwise go to waste.

Since then hundreds of people commented asking how they can get in on the bargains with many people not knowing about the app.

The idea is to stop excess food heading to a landfill and shoppers get a bargain (Facebook)

With more than £20 of savings and several meals in one bag the original post said: "Greggs To Good To Go Bag - £5.90"

It was made up of two separate purchases and included these items:

  • 17 pasties
  • 7 sausage rolls
  • 6 doughnuts
  • 4 gingerbread men
  • 3 cookies
  • 2 yum yums

"That’s got to be the best one I’ve seen," said one comment.

Another user of the app said: "Omg that’s a good haul, we get a good amount but that’s insane! Great bag x"

For others, this was the first time they were hearing about the bargain food app and someone explained: "There is an app called TooGoodToGo, download it and you will see food that needs to be purchased cheaply so it doesn’t go to landfill.

"I love the app, always get Greggs and Costa."

Another happy customer said: "We got two bags today. There were four pasties, three fruit pots, one sandwich, one doughnut, two jammy dodger biscuits, one sandwich roll, four sandwich baguettes."

In Scotland, the app connects consumers to chains like Greggs, Costa and supermarkets, but it also links up to restaurants that want to get rid of their leftover food.

It works by allowing shoppers to reserve a bag to be picked up at the end of the day and, while you get no say in what goes in the bag, it can be a great way of getting a selection of your favourite items for less money.

The app calls them 'Magic Bags' and describes them as "great food at great prices, served with a side of environmental kudos".
