Woman shares her five-step trick to extra crispy potatoes that 'look like magic'

Who among us doesn't love a super crispy potato? The perfect combination of an extra crispy outer and a fluffy inside is undoubtedly sought-after among spud fans but can be notoriously difficult to master.

Thanks to one woman on TikTok though, you no longer need to suffer from mediocre potatoes, as she's uncovered the secret to nailing deliciously crunchy croquettes every single time - and the process only takes five steps.

Montana, who posts under the account @monmackfood, also spoke to the Daily Star about her recipe, which sees her grate her spuds with a cheese grater to achieve a crispy layered result.

She said: "You want a starchy potato so all the strands of potato stick together and don’t fall apart when you fry them. It's best to get a cheese grater for the job. You technically could dice them really finely with a knife but it’d take ages.

"The dish probably takes two to three hours in total including freezing time."

In her TikTok video - which went viral and has racked up more than 4.3 million views - Montana explained you should start by peeling and grating your potatoes before frying the spud strands in olive oil and salt for around five minutes.

She then takes them off the heat, drops them in a glass container lined with cling film, and puts them in the freezer to set - which could take several hours.

Once the potatoes have cooled and are solid, Montana says you should remove the frozen block from the container and chop it into small squares - before tossing the square in cornflour.

Then, simply add the potato squares to a pan of hot oil and deep fry for six to seven minutes. Drain the crispy potatoes on some kitchen towel, season with salt, and enjoy the crunchy perfection.

Montana's video received over 2,000 comments - with many people admitting they couldn't wait to try out the recipe for themselves.

One person wrote: "You just made an amazing recipe. I'm so trying this!"

While another said: "Mmmm. Honestly, this looks like magic."

And a third added: "I want to do this so bad."

Other commenters were just as keen to ty out the hack but were concerned with the fat content of frying the potatoes in oil as they asked whether the recipe would work in an air fryer.

Someone said: "These look soooo good. I wonder if I could make it with an air fryer?"

As someone else had the same question, asking: "Would this work in an air fryer?"
