Woman shares genius way to decorate stairs for Christmas

A woman shared her genius way to decorate her stairs for Christmas — and was then forced to explain to people who criticised her in the comments. Shayna Alnwick, who is a social media influencer and the wife of Cardiff City goalkeeper Jak Alnwick, has been getting people into the festive spirit with her TikTok videos over the last few weeks.

She created a video of her decorating her stairway handrail, which has now been viewed over three million times. The TikToker, with a following of 754,000 people, starts by gluing lots of the big ornaments on pool noodles which she wraps around the handrails. Shayna does this by cutting them down the middle and securing them with zip ties. To make the staircase of her house look extra Christmassy, she then tops them off with the smaller ornaments to fill the gaps and other decorations like pinecones and greenery.

Shayna said in her video: “Now your stairway is a beautiful Christmas masterpiece but the best part is you can cut the zip ties, take it off in one piece and apply it again for next year.”

Lots of people were inspired by her creation, with one person commenting: “This is genius.” Another said: “Saving this because this is an amazing idea! Looks so beautiful. Love it!”

But not everyone was a fan of Shayna’s festive handrail and since posting the 41-second long tutorial video, she has made several other light-hearted TikToks reacting to people’s comments after some raised their concerns that they didn’t think her creation was the most practical.

One person said: “I can’t imagine how hard that’s going to be to take down.” Another commented: “How am I gonna get up to bed safely after too much Christmas eggnog?”

Shanya reacted to the comment with a comical video of her scrambling up her stairs on her hands and feet, and sliding back down them one by one, captioning the clip by saying: “I mean, isn’t this how everyone goes up and down the stairs?”

Someone else said on the original tutorial: “Hopefully no one needs to actually use the railings for safety?” The influencer replied with a quick sketch of her pretending to talk to her grandma through a wall, joking that she was breaking the news to her that she would have to stay upstairs for the foreseeable future.

She captioned the clip: “Looks like grandma and grandpa will have to stay upstairs until Christmas is over as my stairs are apparently no longer functional.” Some simply felt that the crafty video was simply too much effort for them to contemplate. One person said: “Nope not doing it! Just gonna wrap some garland around it and voila.”

In another reaction video to the opinion, Shayla emphasised that she merely made the tutorial as a suggestion rather than an instruction. She said: “If I come across a video of somebody skydiving or jumping off a bridge and doing a backflip, I’ll think it’s cool but I’m not going to go do it. So if you come across a video of a project, or a craft or something DIY, like DIY Christmas Ornament stairs and it doesn’t suit you, don’t do it.”
