Woman sexually assaulted as she walked down the street

A 33-year-old man was arrested after a woman walking in the street was sexually assaulted.

Merseyside Police said they received a report of a sexual assault in Birkenhead in the early hours of Saturday, September 4.

The woman was said to have been walking down Beckwith Street East around 5.30am when she was approached by a man.

The man is said to have "touched her inappropriately" before fleeing the scene.

A short while later, detectives said a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault .

He has since been released under investigation.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We received a report that a woman was sexually assaulted in Birkenhead in the early hours of Saturday, September 4.

"The woman, who is in her 20s, was in the area of Beckwith Street East at around 5.30am when she was approached by a male who touched her inappropriately.

"Following enquiries a short time later a 33 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

"He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries."
