Woman seriously hurt after falling from Southport Pier

A woman was rescued by paramedics and coastguards after suffering serious injuries when she fell off Southport Pier.

The woman, 44, was rushed to hospital with multiple fractures but was said to be conscious and breathing.

Emergency services , including police, fire, ambulance and coastguards, scrambled to the scene at around 6.15pm on Sunday, when the woman landed on hard sand.

A Coastguard Southport spokesman said: “The Coastguard team utilised their 4x4 off road vehicle and drove to the end of the pier to assist.

"Once the casualty had been assessed and stabilised the Coastguard, with assistance from fire crews, police and paramedics used a Coastguard basket stretcher to bring them back the length of the pier to a waiting ambulance.”

North West Ambulance Service deployed its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the incident, along with a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance, and the woman was taken to Aintree hospital.

Police are investigating the incident, but at this stage there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances.

A spokesman said that enquiries are ongoing, adding: “Merseyside Police can confirm that emergency services attended at Southport Pier on Sunday, 11 August 2019 at around 6.15pm following reports that a woman had fallen from the end of the pier.

“The 44-year-old woman suffered multiple fractures and was taken to hospital for treatment.”
