Woman sentenced after youngster found drunk

A Bristol woman who admitted causing cruelty to a child has been spared immediate prison.

Annmarie Austin, 25, appeared at Bristol Crown Court on August 17 and pleaded guilty to a charge of causing cruelty to a person aged under 16 on May 24, 2018.

Edward Hetherington, prosecuting, told the court the case involved a child who became heavily intoxicated after drinking Jack Daniels whiskey.

The court heard a test showed the child's blood contained a life-threatening 262 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The limit for driving is 80.

Anjali Gohil, defending, said her client was a victim of domestic violence who relapsed into abusing alcohol and drugs.

But she told the court: "She has changed remarkably.

"She has turned her life around completely.

"She is completely clean of drugs and she doesn't touch alcohol.

"She is a salt of the earth young woman.

At a previous hearing The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC reassured Austin that she would not receive an immediate custodial sentence.

He handed her nine months' custody, suspended for 18 months.

He told Austin to abide by a three months curfew in which she must stay at home from 7pm to 7am, and ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge.
