Woman sent another person's positive Covid PCR test result by NHS Test and Trace

A woman has said she has been left "worried" after receiving another person's PCR test results by the NHS Test, Trace and Protect system.

Sara, whose surname has been withheld to avoid identifying the other person, received two emails on January 7 and January 11 to say an unknown woman had tested positive for Covid-19.

Despite the messages showing Sara's full name, date of birth and result, the emails also show dates to two different tests - neither of which are Sara's test dates.

NHS Test and Trace have said that they are looking into the matter. Sara believes that the Covid test mix-up is down to the fact that she and the other woman may share the same first and last name.

"On Tuesday, I had a very mild cold," she explained to WalesOnline.

"So at the end of the day, I took a lateral flow test and it came back positive. I booked a PCR test at a local centre for the next day, which was January 5.

"By January 6, nearly 24 hours after taking the PCR test, I got a text message from Test and Trace telling me that I had tested positive. I knew it was right because at this point I had a cold and sore throat, and so I started self-isolating. I didn't report the results to the app that day.

"However on January 7, I received an email which included the results of a positive test. I checked the date and it was in fact my test date - January 5. I looked at the previous test results that I got and realised that it actually said that this test had been taken on January 4.

On January 5, Sara received another person's positive PCR test result by NHS Test and Trace. The test took place on January 4 (NHS Test and Trace)
On January 11, Sara from Anglesey was sent another person's positive PCR test result, which was taken on January 10, by NHS Test and Trace (NHS Test and Trace)

"I had not taken a PCR test on January 4. I found it strange but didn’t think much of it as both of them were positive and decided to leave it at that.

"But then I got another email on January 11 stating that I had taken another test on January 10, which I hadn’t, and that the test was positive. These were definitely not my tests."

Sara decided to contact Test and Trace, who she claims had "no idea" about the test result mix-up.

According to Sara, her full name is fairly common.

"When I asked them if it was a mix up with my name, they said that it might be but they didn't know for sure," she said.

"This could be anyone from anywhere - my first and last names together are very popular, especially around here in north Wales.

"All I'm worried about is that there might be two people with the same name that have taken separate tests and know nothing about their results. Or there is just one 'Sara' who has taken two tests because she’s feeling ill but can’t get the clarification that she's got Covid.

"I’m also worried in case they haven’t received the test and think they’re ok, when in fact they’re positive. They could be mixing with other people and spreading the virus.

"I'm not angry with Test and Trace - it's a very busy time for them. It's just worrying and a bit confusing."

The majority of testing accessed by members of the general public across north Wales is delivered by private contractors. The testing centre that Sara went to was a mobile testing unit.

In response, a spokesperson for UK Government's Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said: "We are unable to comment on individual cases.

"We do look into any complaints made and will take action where appropriate."
