Woman scared dog may choke to death after devastating diagnosis

A woman fears her dog could choke to death if she is unable to raise enough money for urgent vet treatment.

Louise Edelstein, 32, from Newton le Willows, was devastated when she was told, last August her rottweiler Shelby has a tumour on her oesophagus. It is one of the rarest form of cancer and is usually only found when it is past treatment.

The devastated owner, said: “The specialist said that I’m really lucky that they ended up doing a full body CT scan because the tumour in the oesophagus is one of the rarest ones you’ll find and usually when they do it’s too far gone to be treatable.

"We’re waiting to hear back from the hospital. If she doesn’t have it taken out soon, its going to close her oesophagus up and she’s going to choke.”

Shelby is a huge support for Louise who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2016, and although she is now cancer-free she still struggles to walk down the stairs, which Shelby helps with.

Louise added: "“I can’t walk properly, I’m in a lot of pain and Shelby literally walks down the stairs with me. She’s always lying on my stomach when I’m in pain, she’s my shadow.

“When I’m in the bath she’ll sit at the side of the bath to make sure I’m alright. It’s really strange, she’s trained herself to be a service dog even though I’ve never trained her, it’s like it just came naturally to her.”

Shelby needs the tumour removed but doctors are unsure of what other treatment will be needed. She may need radiotherapy to shrink the tumour as it is in a difficult place. She may also need a feeding tube after the surgery to allow the oesophagus to heal on its own.

Louise does have insurance for Shelby however, the £7,000 of insurance has already been used to pay for scans and x-rays. Louise has since taken to Facebook to ask for help.

She added: “We have to make up another five grand for whatever’s coming next.

“She’s been in the school playground since she was a puppy, so all the kids have grown up with her. The butchers on the market on a Friday always gave her meat until she got poorly so she’s stopped going and she hates it because she’s used to going to get her meat.

“We just need a bit of help back." You can donate here.
