Woman says she feels ‘violated’ after car ransacked by thieves

A Bristol woman whose car was ransacked by thieves has said police need to take car vandalism "seriously".

Gwynneth Evans, 27, who lives in Gloucester Road woke to find her car’s window had been smashed and the contents everywhere.

She said: “I feel quite violated as they’ve even gone through the car and pulled everything out - they were clearly looking for something so it wasn't random.”

After immediately reporting the incident to the police she was told that nothing could be done as there was no evidence of who committed the crime.

She said: “The police said they wouldn’t send anyone due to covid and my insurance won’t cover it, so I just have to pay for someone else’s damage.

“This is going to set me back £100 and all I did was park my car where I do everyday.

“It wouldn’t matter if I was rich but I'm only two months into a new job and because of covid I’m having to catch up."

“Why do I have to be at a financial loss for criminals?” (Gwynneth Evans)

Miss Evans, whose car was parked outside the Wellington Pub in Gloucester Road, claims the police told her to get hold of CCTV footage herself.

“The pub is closed due to lockdown so I don't know when I'll get a response from the owners

“I feel a bit sad as it’s not the first time I’ve had a car broken into and I feel like if maybe one in two break-ins were investigated, people might get caught.

“Why do I have to be at a financial loss for criminals?”

“I would like for the police to take car vandalism seriously" (Gwynneth Evans)

Miss Evans posted the incident on a local Facebook page and to her surprise, it has happened to others in the Horfield area.

She said: “I would like for the police to take car vandalism seriously - It's just one car to them but to other people it could be £100-£300 for repairs they can’t afford.

“Why should they have to pay for someone’s reckless acts of crime and vandalism?”

The courier operation manager is keen to raise awareness so that others in the area can remain vigilant of these crimes.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset police said:"We received a call this morning (Monday, November 9) who reported that her car had been broken into in the Western Road area of Horfield.

"It's believed the incident happened between 5pm yesterday evening (Sunday November 8) and 8.20am Monday morning.

"Two pairs of footwear were reported stolen from the vehicle.

Officers ask anyone with information about the offence, or has footage that may show what happened, to report it online or call 101 and give reference number 5220252922.
