Woman says pepper from Sainsbury's was so mouldy it contained a live moth

A woman has spoken of her disgust after discovering a moth inside a rotting pepper she bought from Sainsbury's.

Lou Bennett, from Whitchurch, said she was unpacking her online order on March 21 when she noticed the the peppers felt quite soft.

But it wasn't until later when she started chopping the vegetable that she noticed it was completely rotten inside.

As she cut open the top, she says she spotted a live mouth fluttering around inside.

She told Bristol Live she called the leading supermarket's team to complain, and they asked her to package up item and send it to them with the barcode.

The 49-year-old followed their advice but was then told the team's customer service department could not locate a foreign body and they were not going to investigate further.

To Mrs Bennett's disbelief, they didn't apologise or offer a refund. They instead promised to send a £5 gift voucher, which she says never arrived.

"I can't believe how bad their customer service has been," said Mrs Bennett. " I told them I'd received a rotten and diseased pepper from an online shop.

"I then saw the live moth. I have no idea how it got in there.

"They were well within the use-by date, and I had to throw the whole pack away which ruined the evening meal.

"I don't know how they thought they were going to find the moth.  They just didn't seem interested in my complaint at all."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said:  “We’ve apologised to Lou. Cases like this are extremely rare and we’re investigating with our supplier."
