Woman sails around world on boat with pet cat

A woman and her cat are sailing around the world on a 40ft boat.

Liz Clark adopted her feline first mate Amelia at six months old and has made the animal her sole companion on voyages.

Despite traditionally being creatures which avoid living near the water, Ms Clark's pet has reportedly become accustomed to her surroundings.

"She has adapted to living surrounded by water. She’s learned to trust that she will be safe with me," Ms Clark told BuzzFeed.

The pair have traversed the western coast of Mexico and Central America and around the South Pacific on a boat named Swell.

Amelia said she also dabbled in some fishing at night with the aid of the light from the boat.

“On calm nights, she fishes off of a soft top surfboard attached to the side of Swell with a small light that attracts fish,” said Ms Clark.

The sailor, who is originally from San Diego, said Amelia made the boat feel more like a home.

Ms Clarke added that she slept under the stars and dived into the sea every morning.
