Woman sacked after refusing to buy a Christmas present for a co-worker

A woman was fired from her job after she refused to buy a secret Santa gift for a co-worker - because he wasn't a Christian.

Sharing his story anonymously, a man said that when the gifts were handed out just before Christmas he was left empty-handed, despite putting his name into the hat.

Then he remembered a conversation he'd had with a coworker, Jen, and how she was a little surprised when he said he no longer went to church.

He then approached Jen and she admitted that she had got his name in the secret Santa ring, and had chosen not to buy him anything as he was 'profiting off' the religious holiday.

Do you think Christmas is just for Christians? Let us know in the comments...

Taking to Reddit, the man said: "A few days before Christmas we all were supposed to exchange our gifts.

"I gave the person I picked their gift and then I was waiting to receive mine, I didn't know who picked me of course but eventually it seemed like everyone had gotten their gifts except me.

"Then Jen came over and said she was the one who picked my name, but since I didn't believe in Christmas there was no reason for her to get me a gift in celebration of it.

"I was honestly shocked but she left before I could say anything. It did bother me a bit but I decided to let it go because I didn't want any drama."

A friend, named Amy, learned of what happened to the man and she encouraged him to report it, but he insisted he didn't want any trouble so left it at that.

But when he returned from his Christmas break he was called into his boss's office who wanted to know the whole story, and they then said they would be having a chat with Jen.

He continued: "Yesterday I noticed Jen's desk was cleared out, I asked Amy about it and she said Jen had been fired.

"I feel bad because I didn't care about getting a present that much and I don't think it's something that warrants getting someone fired."

After sharing his story online, the man was inundated with advice from strangers who said it was a good thing the boss got involved.

One said: "She didn't get fired for not getting you a present, she got fired for the things she said and did. She did this to herself, not you."

While a second added: "Her behaviour got her fired, not you being honest when asked a question by your supervisor."

And a third wrote: "Your coworker got herself fired for trying to stick her personal beliefs where they don't belong and showing blatant prejudice towards other people in the office.

"Telling the truth about what happened landed your work environment and coworkers in a less toxic place."
