Woman's warning to anyone who has conifers in their garden

A woman has issued a warning to people who have conifers in their garden after a near tragedy in her mum's garden.

The woman posted in a public Facebook group Rainford Community Watch after the incident on Sunday, June 4, and thanked neighbours for their help.

She said neighbours alerted her mum after seeing smoke and flames billowing from the conifer trees in her garden, which had caught alight, and ran to help. Neighbours reportedly grabbed hoses and tried to put out the flames.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue service were also alerted and attended the scene.

However with "no obvious cause" for the fire the woman has now issued a warning to other people with conifers to be aware in the warm weather.

The woman said: "Firstly I want to thank everyone who helped my mum today when her conifers went up in flames and destroyed her garden. If it hadn’t of been for the fantastic neighbours with their hoses, the house would have caught fire too before the fire service got there.

"Nobody was having a barbecue nearby, there was no obvious cause, and the firemen said it could have been something as insignificant as a small piece of glass that started it."

The mum added there were no major injuries following the incident but she wanted to warn people with conifers to give them a water.

She said: "A warning to anyone with conifers, if they are dry, spray them with water. Due to the lack of rain, these are the type of call outs they [the fire service] are getting."
