Woman's voice 'stolen' from beyond the grave days before her funeral

A granddaughter was left 'heartbroken' as recordings of her late nan were 'stolen' from her car just days before the funeral.

Kelly Saunders, who lives in Old Swan claims a sealed, padded envelope with a cassette of her nan singing on the radio was taken from her car.

The "devastated" 35-year-old said she kept the cassette in her vehicle so she could take it to a shop on Monday morning to be transferred onto a CD.

She said the CD of her nan singing was going to be played at her funeral next Monday, as the coffin entered the church service and her voiced would then fill the room.

The postwoman alleges her car was 'ransacked' on Sunday night between 11pm and 5am.

She said bank cards, a Sat Nav and other items were left untouched in the car but the envelope containing the cassette was the only thing taken.

Kelly told the ECHO : "I am devastated.

"The car was broken into and there were bank cards, a Sat Nav and lots of other stuff in there, but the only thing they took was the padded envelope.

"It was left in the packaging and left inside the car to take down to the shop on Monday morning, I only received it on Saturday.

"They probably thought it was money, because if you give it a squeeze it felt like it.

"I felt left it in the passenger compartment out of view."

Kelly's nan, Erica Watson - but known as Julie Watson - was a professional jazz singer and toured with the Pete Allen Jazz Band in the 70s, but sadly died on Sunday, September 8.

The cassette holds special memories for Kelly and her family as it holds the band's recordings which had been played on the radio .

The mum added: "I am just devastated, I had to tell my mum this morning and that was just awful.

"She recently lost her dad as well and so it struggling at the moment.

"I was going to return the tape to my nan's husband who lives in Newbury and I keep the CD.

"I can't do that now, it's very sentimental to him and the family."

Kelly said since Monday she has looked up and down neighbouring roads and bushes to see if the parcel had been dumped.

She also asked neighbours to look out for the package but it yet to be found.

The 35-year-old added: "It's one of those things that I can't think about without getting upset.

"I feel responsible because it was in my hands, in my car and I am just devastated.

"I just want to back, I don't even want it in time for the funeral, I just want it back.

"I've just been looking around for it and it's so sad to think that it's just sat somewhere never to be listened to again and we'll never hear her voice again."

Kelly claims she will be contacting Merseyside Police about the incident.
