Woman's three-step slow cooker recipe for making bread if you can't find any in shops

As uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus outbreak continues, so does the panic-buying.

Despite people being urged to shop as they normally would, many can't seem to stop stockpiling everything and anything.

From toilet roll to pasta, shoppers are wiping supermarket shelves out, leaving some people unable to buy the essentials.

If you've been struggling to find bread in any of your local shops, fear not, as one very helpful lady has shared a simple recipe for making your own at home - and it doesn't cost very much to do.

Dannielle Luttrell from Hobart, Tasmania, has gone viral on social media after sharing her method for making bread in a slow cooker, reports Manchester Evening News.

Her Facebook post has garnered over 37,000 likes, and hundreds of thousands of shares.

So how does she do it?

Danielle starts by gathering all her ingredients together.

Here's a look at what she uses:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • Two cups of warm milk
  • Two Tbsp melted UNSALTED butter
  • One to three tablespoons of sugar (add more if you like sweeter bread)
  • Three tablespoons of active dry yeast (conservative side)
  • Six cups of whole wheat flour (or three cups whole wheat & three cups all-purpose flour)
  • Two teaspoons of salt
  • One teaspoon of baking powder

Once she's got all of this, she breaks the recipe down into three steps.

Step one

Grab a big bowl and stir together the warm water, one (or more) tablespoons of sugar and three tablespoons of yeast. Wait for five minutes (no longer!) – it should be frothy on the top. While you're waiting warm two cups of milk and two tbsp of butter in microwave.

Step two

Add milk and butter to the yeast mixture. Using a standing mixer slowly add the six cups of flour, two teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of baking powder. Mix together to form a dough and knead.

Danielle explains she used a dough hook on her mixer once she had incorporated most of the flour to knead for about five minutes, then kneaded it by hand for another five to seven minutes.

Step three

Line slow cooker with baking paper and place in your round ball of dough. It will rise in the slow cooker as it heats through. Cook on high power for two to two and a half hours. Start checking at every seven to 10 minutes until top is sponge-y but springs back and no moisture on the top. The bottom should be a nice brown colour as well as sides.

She went on to say that once cooked, she stuck her bread in the oven on broil/grill for less than five minutes to get a nice crusty top on the loaf.

Danielle added: "You can use a tea towel on top if you want to avoid condensation dripping in down on the loaf. I haven't tried this myself.

"Make sure it is completely cooked through - my loaf took 2 1/2 hours!!

"Slice and enjoy as whole grain toast or sandwich bread!"
