Woman's terror as rock hurled through kitchen window as she cooks dinner

A woman was hit by glass after a rock was hurled through her kitchen window as she cooked dinner in Didsbury.

Rebekah Spratt, 30, heard a 'huge crash' and turned round to see a rock on the window sill 5ft away. The public relations worker was home alone at the time and struck by the broken glass.

Rebekah told the Manchester Evening News : "I was just making some curry when there was a huge crash behind me. A rock was on the window sill and the glass had shattered all the way through.

"If I had been sat at the kitchen table I definitely would have had a big shard of glass in my face." She called 999 to report her ordeal at 9.30pm on August 30 - but claims was told the police were too busy to visit.

Rebekah added: "I understand, but it wasn't very helpful at the time." The 30-year-old said she was told police would visit her in the next two days. However, the following day she received a text from police to close the case.

The worried resident said small stones have caused two cracks in windows since she moved into the apartment in Didsbury village with her boyfriend Brad in February.

She hoped officers would visit the scene of the latest incident to find CCTV footage and speak to neighbours. Rebekah, who helped launch The Right To Walk campaign in the aftermath of Sarah Everard's death, took to social media to report the rock-throwing attack.

In her Facebook post, Rebekah wrote: 'Hi everyone. At about 10pm tonight, (Tuesday, August 30) a rock was thrown through our kitchen window while I was alone at home. Window is completely smashed and glass hit me as I was cooking about 5 feet or so away.

"I immediately reported to the police, but didn’t get much luck in them sending anyone over or being particularly bothered.

"Posting here in case anyone else has had a similar incident in the area. Or to warn people to be wary tonight. Would advise closing curtains etc.

"This is a repeat issue which we have reported before - previously it has been apples or smaller stones resulting in cracked windows, but the threat level has now accumulated to rocks .

"If it had been while I was sat in the living room (window they have previously targeted) this would have been a very different story. It does feel as though they meant to his the window as I was most likely in sight though I did have wooden blinds partially closed."

One replied "Friday evening I was walking in didsbury (SIC) and a bunch of kids were picking up pebbles from the street and then throwing them at cars etc, I told them to stop but all I got back was threats."

Another suggested: "Speak or email your local councillor ask them to get the community police to increase local patrols."

Rebekah added: "Even after learning I was home alone, I was disappointed to find that the police were too busy to send anyone to patrol the area, or enquire with neighbours for any witnesses of the incident."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "I can confirm the crime was closed due to there being no viable lines of enquiry. If any information is known then it should be passed to us via LiveChat or 101 quoting incident 3467 of 30/08/2022."
